The Highland Biological Recording Group was established in 1986 to:
- stimulate public interest and involvement in biological recording;
- collect data on Highland wildlife through surveys;
- publish the results in an annual newsletter and special publications;
- maintain a directory of local specialists and recorders;
- transfer data to and from National Recording Schemes.
We aim to engage as many people and organisations as possible with our work.
We mainly cover the Highland Council local authority area, which extends from the north coast of Scotland to Lochaber and the Cairngorms, and includes Skye and the Small Isles. We work closely with the Outer Hebrides Biological Recording and Orkney Biodiversity Records Centre.
The HBRG has more than 130 members, mostly based in Highland. The membership has enormous expertise in most aspects of natural history. We hold meetings twice each year (April and September) and also organise summer field visits.
Our publications include ‘Highland Naturalist’ with articles about Highland biodiversity, and results from the year’s surveys every spring, and 4 or 5 Newsletters each year.
We have published five atlases showing the distribution and ecology of different taxa in Highland.
Our data are available within the National Biodiversity Network.
